Learning to read with the Montessori method
Learning to read is an exciting stage in a child's development. Montessori pedagogy offers a unique and effective approach to this fundamental acquisition. Based on the principles of Maria Montessori, this method emphasizes the use of materials that are both sensory and concrete, and that gradually give access to reading. Here's how you can help your child discover and enter the almost magical world of reading.
The first step is to familiarize your child with the letters of the alphabet by their sound, not by their name. Use supports such as Montessori rough letters, or a small tray with sand, which allows the child to trace the letters with his or her fingers, reinforcing muscle and sensory memory. Encourage your child to repeat the sound of each letter as he traces them.
Once your child knows the basic sounds, you can start combining them to form simple words - "yarn - motorcycle - Ace - underpants - bus...". In our schools, teachers have mobile alphabets for this purpose. Use small objects representing the chosen words, as well as cards or pictures with written words, to help your child associate sounds with the corresponding letters. Read books together that are adapted to your child's reading level, underlining words and encouraging your child to read them aloud. Once you've mastered the mechanics of simple, short words, you can begin to integrate the sounds known as digrams: "gn - ou - on - ch - an...".
Beginning to write is a wonderful accompaniment to learning to read. Give your child the opportunity to practise his handwriting skills, using notebooks with wide line spacing and suitable wooden pencils with finger wedges. Encourage them to write simple words using the letters they've learned.
The progression in learning to read must be adapted to the child. Respect the child's pace and offer a variety of activities to maintain interest. Use word games, riddles and play activities to reinforce reading skills. Children love to hide short messages around the house!
Don't forget that Montessori pedagogy encourages children's autonomy. To create an environment conducive to learning and independent exploration, don't hesitate to provide your child with books adapted to his or her reading level. There are now a large number of Montessori-inspired books available.
By using the Montessori approach to teaching your child to read, you'll give him a head start and prepare him for the start of the first grade with confidence and ease!
